ALL-MEDIA PLEIN AIR PAINTING & DRAWING WORKSHOP
"Botanical Arts & Nature Sketching"
July 19-28, 2009

Join popular instructor/acclaimed artist Cynthia Padilla and like-minded art and nature enthusiasts documenting both the natural beauty and cultivated grounds & gardens of Antigua Guatemala. You’ll spend unhurried time, lulled by the gentle breezes of “the land of eternal spring” and the soothing sounds of splashing fountains working ‘en plein air’ (translate - in intimate courtyard gardens) and bromeliad filled fincas (farms).

Our days begin with an intro of materials and demo of technique. (Pencil, pen & ink, watercolor, pastels are transportable options). The instructor’s step-by-step approach guides all levels to extend their range to include detailed botanical renderings or loose sketchbook entries of fruit, flower, visiting insect; diminutive watercolor landscapes; pen & ink renderings of the ancient architecture; and vignettes (little scenes).

Complete beginners as well as accomplished artists will be thrilled with this unique art & cultural adventure that awaits behind the ancient color-washed walls. Antigua is a delightful small town with international ambiance, great shopping, funky outdoor cafés, galleries, gardens, history, architecture, flora and fauna, and warm-hearted welcoming people. We'll also head into the highlands where volcanoes rise out of the early morning mists of Lake Atitlan.

[NOTE: ‘watercolor’ is abreviated as 'w/c'].
• Paint - A compact w/c travel set. Place in a ziplock bag.
• Watercolor Pad – (2) Small. My preference is spiral bound and for painting on location, no larger than 8 1/2 x 11’ish. You’ll work at your own pace, but I would suggest bringing a third pad. Should you lean toward the ‘prolific.’ Secure each with a thick rubber band and/or ‘bulldog clamps’ for windy days. Slip each book in its on ziplock bag.
• Brushes - (1) small (1) medium w/c round. Optional: (1) medium w/c flat.
• Water contanier & rag.
• Palette- Small and lidded with wells. The pricier w/c travel sets mentioned above will have palette, brush and often water container built- in.

Technique: Pastel Option
"I would like to paint the way a bird sings.”--Claude Monet

Musings
“Not all who wander are lost.”-- J.R.R. Tolkien

• Dress in layers prepared for all outdoor conditions. Antigua is in the mountains, so days are warm and evenings cool even in summer.
• Wide brimmed hat; cotton bandana; sunglasses.
• Backpack - ALL supplies must fit inside. Antigua has old cobbled streets and we need to move about hands free. NOTE: An option to the backpack is the.....
• Fishing Vest/Photograpers Vest- Lots of zippered pockets, mesh, snaps etc hold all your art gear. There are delightful versions, in colorful native textiles available in the markets of Antigua!

Critique
"Do what you feel in your heart to be right, for you'll be criticized anyway”--Eleanor Roosevelt

"Getting to take the trip to Guatemala was great. But probably the greatest thing about the trip was what I learned in your workshop. I had wanted to learn to do water color for a long time and had taken lessons at different times. I just wasn't getting it and got so frustrated I gave up on doing water color. Your instruction made me feel that doing water color was not difficult. I learned techniques which made water color seem easy - and fun. It made me enthused about doing water color again!"

continue to learn and experiment, both beyond my skill level and my present knowledge of the types of media."

"We had a lot of people sign up for the Botanical Arts Workshops after hanging Cynthia's exhibit, although a few (students) were nervous that they didn't know how to do it. I had to remind them that, is why they are taking the class."
